Chelsea youngster Dion Rankine looks set to leave the club for good this summer, and it looks like his destination will be Wigan Athletic, with the League One (third division) side reportedly “closing in” on his signing.
Terms of the potential deal are unknown: Rankine’s technically under contract for another year, so there could even be a nominal transfer fee (though Wigan were docked eight points this season for prior violations relating to finances and wages, so money’s probably still a bit tight).
The 21-year-old right winger, who joined the Academy at the U14 level from Cambridge United’s setup, spent all of last season on loan at another third division team, Exeter City, starting 21 of his 33 appearances in League One.
Rankine recently told the Chelsea official website how much he enjoyed the challenge of that loan, giving him such a different experience from youth football, and how he’s looking to kick on from there.
