LATEST; Burton set to Clash Against Wigan, said will Secure 3 Point…

INFORMATION from Tony Bentley about the upcoming home game vs Wigan Athletic.

Burton Albion last competed in a Football League match on October 3 in 2020. During the Covid-affected season, Portsmouth was the host for a game that was played without spectators. Four Albion-bound players—Craig MacGillivray, Tom Naylor, Bryn Morris, and Marcus Harness—were on the Portsmouth team that day. Harness was teasing his former colleagues as he gave Portsmouth a lead in the second minute. In the 14th minute, Lucas Akins tied the score for the Brewers, and six minutes later, Naylor gave Burton the lead by putting the ball into his own net. Two minutes into the second half, Harness and Pompey scored again, and Jack Whatmough gave the visitors the lead once more an hour later. Pull back then

The Pirelli was host to Cambridge United on Friday, October 3, 2014. With five straight victories in home league games, Gary Rowett’s team entered the game in strong form. But in the 35th minute, Tom Elliott gave the visitors the lead. In the 64th minute, Ryan Donaldson made it 0-2 before Elliott scored his second and his team’s third goal in the 76th. Despite Lucas Akins’ goal nine minutes from the end, the visitors ended up with all three points.

Jake Buxton’s final game in charge of the Brewers was just before the previous encounter. It arrived on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, without any fans present. John Joe O’Toole gave Albion the lead in the thirteenth minute. Five minutes later, Kyle Joseph overruled this. In the 25th minute, John Brayford gave Burton the lead again, but Joseph again tied the score in the 28th. In the 72nd minute, Kane Hemmings gave Albion their third lead of the match, but less than a minute later, Joseph scored his hat-trick and Wigan’s third goal to tie the score. Then, in the 83rd minute, Wigan’s Will Keane scored the game-winning goal to cap an incredible 3-4 victory.

On Saturday, January 14, 2017, the two teams competed in a Championship game. Before joining Albion the following summer, defenders Stephen Warnock and Jake Buxton were both a part of the Wigan squad. Callum Connelly gave Wigan the lead just before halftime, and he added his team’s second goal after 64 minutes to seal the visitors’ 0-2 victory. Goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin was hurt in the first half of that game, and Stephen Bywater took his place at halftime to make his Championship debut for the Brewers.

On Tuesday, April 19, 2016, both teams were vying for League One promotion. In front of 5,461 spectators, Michael Jacobs gave Wigan the lead in the eighth minute. Tom Naylor then equalized in the third quarter to give his team a point. After the season, both teams would be promoted automatically.

Albion have only ever defeated Wigan at the Pirelli in the Capital One Cup. On Tuesday, August 12 2014 a crowd of 2,602 saw Marc-Antoine Fortune put Wigan ahead in the 27th minute. Dominic Knowles equalised right on half time, before Stuart Beavon scored, what turned out to be the winning goal, in the 52nd minute to see Albion beat a Championship side for the first time ever in the League Cup.
