Despite Lucas Akins’ goal nine minutes from the end, the visitors ended up with all three points.

John Joe O’Toole gave Albion the lead in the thirteenth minute. Five minutes later, Kyle Joseph overruled this. Before joining Albion the following summer, defenders Stephen Warnock and Jake Buxton were both a part of the Wigan squad. Callum Connelly gave Wigan the lead just before halftime, and he added his team’s second goal after 64 minutes to seal the visitors’ 0-2 victory. Goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin was hurt in the first half of that game, and Stephen Bywater took his place at halftime to make his Championship debut for the Brewers.
On Tuesday, April 19, 2016, both teams were vying for League One promotion. In front of 5,461 spectators, Michael Jacobs gave Wigan the lead in the eighth minute. Tom Naylor then equalized in the third quarter to give his team a point. After the season, both teams would be promoted automatically.
Albion have only ever defeated Wigan at the Pirelli in the Capital One Cup. On Tuesday, August 12 2014 a crowd of 2,602 saw Marc-Antoine Fortune put Wigan ahead in the 27th minute. Dominic Knowles equalised right on half time, before Stuart Beavon scored, what turned out to be the winning goal, in the 52nd minute to see Albion beat a Championship side for the first time ever in the League Cup.
