A new loan deal at Latics could benefit Chambers
Following consecutive away wins at Lincoln City, and League One champions Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic will be hoping to end the season with three wins in a row, and five games unbeaten, as they host Bristol Rovers on Saturday afternoon.
Shaun Maloney’s team won 2-1 at Fratton Park thanks to a goal from Josh Magennis in the 83rd minute. Kusini Yengi of Pompey scored the home team’s consolation goal two minutes later.
Midway through the first half, academy graduate Baba Adeeko laid off the ball, setting up full-back Luke Chambers, who was on loan from Premier League champions Liverpool, to shoot a deflected attempt into the bottom corner, giving the Latics the lead.
Chambers, who joined the Greater Manchester team in January, is a prime illustration of how Maloney effectively utilised the loan market throughout his team’s transfer embargo, which was in effect for the summer and the January transfer windows.
Throughout his career, the 19-year-old has played for the England men’s Euro Elite Squad, formerly known as the under-20s, during his stint with Wigan, and has certainly been an asset for the League One outfit.
The DW Stadium faithful would certainly be pleased to see Chambers offered a fresh loan deal with the club this summer, while Maloney is also keen to retain the starlet’s services.
Maloney makes Chambers admission
Speaking to Latics TV, the manager said: “I’d love to have him (Chambers) next season.
“He’s at an amazing club, but normally with these loans, if they have a positive season, they step up a division.
“I’ll see, he’s been brilliant, brilliant lad, and in different positions.
“I’ve played him left wing-back, left centre-back.
“Today (Saturday) I played him when we had the ball as almost a left six, and he was brilliant.”
Recent results, such as the victory over Pompey, show that the Latics are moving in the right direction, and this summer Maloney is able to buy players in order to shape his own squad, unlike the last two transfer windows.
