Wigan Athletics part ways with prolific striker as they prepare for a busy summer

Northern Ireland striker Josh Magennis says he “could end up anywhere” as he begins his search for a new club.

The 33-year-old former Aberdeen, Charlton and Hull City forward has been released by Wigan Athletic after over two years with the League One club.

Magennis is experiencing a first summer as a free agent since starting his professional career with Cardiff City in 2009.

“I’ve been fortunate in my career – I’ve been attached to a club coming into every summer so I had the familiarity of where I was going back to in pre-season,” he said.

“But this pre-season I could end up anywhere – it can be daunting as it’s the unknown.

It’s an odd one; the main point is that nobody has to pay for you; it’s entirely up to you whether you want it or not.

“With football, you never know what’s around the corner, but it’s a new perspective, so I’m looking forward to it and will see where my path takes me next.”Hopefully I can go and help a team, whatever standards and requirements they need.”

Despite not having a club, Magennis was included in the Northern Ireland team for their June friendly against Andorra and Spain.

With 78 international games under his belt, he has scored 11 goals. Michael O’Neill’s team will be playing Spain in Mallorca for the Euro 2024, and he aims to draw attention.

“Your just in the shop window – we’re playing against Spain in another country, there will be other scouts watching because of the magnitude of the game so it’s a chance to go and try to perform,” said Magennis.

“I’m willing to go anyplace as long as my family is content with it. As I’m 33 years old and have definitely learned a lot from the game, I still want to go somewhere where I can continue to grow.

“I simply want to be in a setting where I can contribute, both on and off the field—perhaps in a young team or dressing room.

“Alternatively, a manager can require a seasoned player with the ability to monitor the locker room; during my final year at Wigan, I fulfilled this role.

“I’m searching for that kind of next challenge. I’m not attempting to create the wheel, but my function and responsibilities may differ slightly. I’m just attempting to handle it and watch my progress.”
