M6 motorway closed after one dead in horror crash

One person has died in an accident on the M6 motorway.
According to Cumbria Police, the incident on the northbound carriageway at approximately 10:00 BST involved a single vehicle.
In order to facilitate the vehicle’s removal and investigations, the road between junctions 36 and 38 was closed.
A spokesperson for the police said: “The northbound carriageway is likely to remain closed for some time whilst police and partners continue their work at the scene.”

This morning, a portion of the M6 motorway is completely closed due to the discovery of a woman’s body.

‘Reports of a person falling from a bridge’ prompted emergency services to rush to the motorway near Wigan early this morning, according to GMP Traffic. Sadly, a woman was discovered dead at the location.

From junction 27 for Standish to junction 26 for the Orrell Interchange, the motorway is still closed. There is a diversion route in place, and accident investigation work is still being done on the scene.

It is “very slow” traffic until the closure. “Significant delays are expected in the area for the immediate future,” according to the police.

“#INCIDENT | We’re responding to reports of a person falling from a bridge on the M6 between J27 & J26 southbound,” GMP Traffic stated in a post on X. The road is closed while emergency personnel respond, and there will likely be major delays in the area for the foreseeable future. I appreciate your patience at this moment.”

“We were called to the junction 27 of the M6 at approximately 1.25 am this morning for a concern for the welfare of a female,” a GMP spokesperson continued. Upon arriving at the scene, we regretfully found the female’s body.

Since police collision investigations are necessary due to the nature of the incident, the carriageway won’t be able to reopen until these have been completed. As of right now, no timeframe exists for when the M6 southbound between J27 and J26 will open.
