Liam Byrne, a prop for the Wigan Warriors, commented that returning to action after missing the previous month due to suspension felt “really good.”
The Ireland international, who received a red card against St Helens on Good Friday, served his four-match suspension and returned to the pitch on Thursday night.
Wigan defeated the Catalan Dragons 30-8, with Byrne starting in the front row as Matt Peet’s team got back to winning ways.
“Being back out there felt really good,” Byrne remarked. “With our strength and conditioning team, I worked hard for four weeks to make sure I was returning in the best possible shape. It was a great triumph, and I had a great time tonight.

Byrne acknowledges that there are many talented players vying for a spot in Peet’s matchday 17, and that neither he nor any of his teammates can afford to sit back and take it all in the first squad.
Against Hull KR on Saturday at Robin Park Arena, Byrne’s teammates packmen Sam Walters, Sam Eseh, Harvie Hill, and Tiaki Chan will play for the reserves.
Byrne stated, “There’s plenty (of competition).” Every single one of them is incredibly talented, making them wonderful people to be around and offering really tremendous competition as well. It feels like the most middles we’ve ever had.
It’s good (for everyone) because they’re great boys to play with and they keep you on your toes every week.
Throughout my suspension, I was making sure that I wasn’t sitting on my laurels and that my training had improved me to the point where I could maybe rejoin the team. I was lucky to immediately return to the squad because, as you would imagine, Sam Walters and Mike Cooper (who failed an HIA) were sidelined this week. However, things could have gone very differently, so I’m glad for both the win and my return to the team.
Byrne and Wigan’s next game is a trip to John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday, where they will play the Huddersfield Giants in Super League Round 11.
