Ally McCoist brands reported Wolves target ‘different class’ as Wolves fans prepare for big summer

Wolves fans are preparing themselves for a big summer and are hoping that Gary O’Neil gets a good level of backing from Fosun.

The situation is different this time around; Wanderers don’t have financial difficulties, having sold a number of stars last year.

There isn’t the same pressure, although it is expected that the club could still offload one of two big names in order to help prompt a rebuild. Pedro Neto and Rayan Ait-Nouri are the two players who have had the most inches in the gossip columns.

Ait-Nouri leaving would be disappointing, but every player has a price. Fosun could well try to cash in on the Algerian.

And if that occurs, Wolves might try to sign Luton Town’s Alfie Doughty, a man Ally McCoist really admires.

Over the weekend, rumors circulated that Wolves and West Ham had entered the competition to sign the 24-year-old, joining Crystal Palace.

Along with players like Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo, Doughty was one of the Hatters’ most notable players in 2023–2024, appearing in 43 games across all competitions.

For Luton, Doughty tallied three goals and provided eight assists, and he should be happy with the performance he displayed in his first season in the top division.

Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist discussed Doughty this morning on talkSPORT. They were both quite impressed with the English wing-back and thought he was one of the Premier League’s surprise packages.

“Surprise package of the season,” stated Stelling. I possess one. I enjoy seeing him play so much. He wasn’t the greatest Stoke City could have had, but then again, they don’t get the best out of

McCoist continued, saying, “I honestly believe he has been fantastic. Alfie Doughty has proven to be an unexpected gem. He belongs to a separate class. Nobody would have anticipated it, in my opinion.

Doughty could be a solid Rayan Ait-Nouri replacement

First and foremost, Wolves should absolutely not be selling Ait-Nouri this summer. The 22-year-old is on an exciting trajectory at the moment, and his market value could sky-rocket in the next year.

But if Fosun do happen to cash in on the Algerian, then Doughty wouldn’t be a bad replacement.

He has been a standout for Luton in 2023–2024, displaying genuine inventiveness on the left side for the Hatters.

It would merely make sense for Wolves, given Doughty has played primarily as a left wing-back for Luton and Wolves clearly implemented an ing-back-heavy style in 2023–2024.

The only thing to wonder is whether Gary O’Neil plans to go to a back four because Doughty hasn’t actually played left-back in the classic sense in a while.
