The Portuguese international was a vital player for Wolves last season as he finished as the club’s top scorer in their successful battle against relegation.
But because Wolves needed to raise money and because Gary O’Neil didn’t think highly of the winger, Podence was loaned to the Greek team.
To maintain his value, the 28-year-old did sign a short-term contract with the team prior to leaving. It has been anticipated that, sooner rather than later, Podence will leave the Wolves permanently.
However, rumours surfaced today suggesting that Olympiacos may not be his final destination, as the team has not yet decided whether to sign the winger.
Podence has so far enjoyed a rather successful tenure in the nation since joining the Greek side.
The winger has little trouble reaching the back of the net, even though the team is now fourth in the Greek Superleague.
Podence has made 28 appearances this season and scored 10 goals, three of which came in the Europa League. In addition, the winger has four assists, bringing his total goal contributions to 14.
Additionally, Podence scored a spectacular goal over the weekend that elicited emotions from his former Wolves colleagues.
Sportime reporter Giannis Chorianopoulos thinks the team hasn’t decided whether to activate his buyout clause despite this success.
Daniel Podence to return to Wolves?
Olympiacos might still be able to contribute for the Wolves if he decides not to exercise the option to purchase.
Pedro Neto’s constant absence means that Podence might be a useful fallback until a longer-term fix is found. The winger may still be useful next season, particularly if Wolves make it to the Europa League.
That being said, that doesn’t seem likely. Given Podence’s production, it would seem silly for the Greek team to pass up the opportunity to purchase the winger for €5 million.
