Gary O’Neil: made January decisions

Gary O’Neil admits there are plenty of moving parts that will determine how much business Wolves can do in the January window.

Wolves must be cautious this January after a turbulent summer in which they were obliged to sell a number of players in order to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability standards.

They do, however, have some wiggle room to make reinforcements, with a striker at the top of the shopping list and the possibility of bringing in a winger.

With Jonny Castro Otto’s future uncertain, potential sales will have an impact on the Wolves’ ability to do business, and O’Neil feels those variables will play a role.

“We haven’t had many discussions around January yet,” O’Neil remarked. We were aware that this season would not be a profitable one for us. We’ll get a chance to do some in January.

“However, there will be many factors to consider in determining when, how, and how much we can do.” As it approaches – and it is approaching – we may anticipate the January question slightly closer to January.”

Despite his ambition to bring in more attacking talent, O’Neil was quick to rally behind the players currently on his roster.

“Every manager will want windows and the ability to shape things,” he added. But I’m pleased with the gang I’ve assembled.

“I’ve been saying that since I walked in. I enjoy working with all of them. For my part, I have no complaints about anyone.

“When I came, I understood the assignment. I believe the club needed to try to make £100 million this summer. That is what we were attempting to do.

“I came in knowing that because I knew the group I had. I was pleased with it at the time, and I am even more so today. There are no problems with needing to replace people. I will always work with the group that the club assigns to me.”

Meanwhile, O’Neil has asked his teammates to to be wary of suspensions because of the small squad size.

After earning up five yellow cards against Arsenal, Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes were both suspended, compounding O’Neil’s squad issues with certain players already unavailable with injury.

“You don’t want to lose Mario and Joao for any games,” he continued.

“They’re on five (bookings), you want to keep them from getting to ten.” We want to make every effort to keep everyone available. I previously mentioned the size of the team, and while some may not have fully believed or understood what I was saying, going to the Emirates with three under-21s demonstrates what I was talking about earlier in the season.

“If we have a small cluster in certain areas, we end up quite a long way below where we would normally be with our senior group.” It’s wonderful to have them back. It will be wonderful to have Rayan and Pedro back. We have a lot of games coming up, so I’m confident that everyone will get enough playing time to keep them all satisfied.”
