The Wolves were not up to par on Saturday at Molineux, losing to the Bees. The hosts struggled all game and were unable to maintain their form from the previous weekend, even though O’Neil’s team had defeated Brentford in their three prior meetings this season.
For Wolves, a lot of things that could have gone wrong did. Before Matheus Cunha was substituted early in the match, Hwang Hee-Chan was sidelined due to an injury in the lead-up.
Subsequently, Craig Dawson’s second-half equaliser was disallowed due to offside, and Ivan Toney sealed the victory in the closing moments.
Following two consecutive losses at Molineux, manager O’Neill gave a candid evaluation of Wolves to the media.
Wolves were “nowhere near good enough
Wolves were not present at the races on Saturday, following a number of outstanding performances thus far in 2024. For O’Neil’s team, Molineux in particular had been a stronghold, but last week’s 4-3 loss to Manchester United put a stop to that.
The team may have played its worst at Molineux since losing to Brighton 4-1 at the beginning of the season.
O’Neil argued that his team wasn’t good enough that day, indicating that he was unsatisfied with how his team played.
“We’ve done a really good job as a group,” he said to Wolves. Overall, the group has done an amazing job of staying at a high standard. Using the excitement of last week and what we managed to produce in comparison to how we feel now, we can ensure that we do better than we did today. We are incredibly disappointed that we fell short of it today, and the players will be as well. Although there were several contributing elements, the performance as a whole was clearly far below satisfactory.
Wolves need to quickly put Brentford game behind them
Wolves’ performance was unusual of them since they did very little to actually hurt the visiting team. The only genuine effort that put the ‘keeper to the test was Pedro Neto’s final header in the first half.
This was particularly unexpected considering how many goals have been scored as of late. Wolves continued to score goals despite their previous bad performances.
All O’Neil’s team needs to do now is move on from the outcome. The team plays Brighton in the FA Cup later this month then travels to Spurs the following weekend in a difficult match.
Now is the time for Wolves to ensure that this defeat was an isolated incident and get back to winning as soon as possible.
