Wolves are on the lookout for a new striker and Gary O’Neil should target a ‘goal machine’, who has been compared to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.
Wolves have made a fast start to the summer transfer window by confirming permanent deals for Tommy Doyle from Manchester City and highly-rated Braga winger Rodrigo Gomes
Doyle spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Molineux before Gary O’Neil triggered the release clause in his contract at the start of May while Rodrigo was captured on Wednesday after agreeing to a £12.7 million fee.
The 20-year-old, who has been lauded for his versatility, can play as a winger, attacking midfielder or wing-back across various systems, and looks like an excellent coup for the club.
Yet, O’Neil still has a lot of work to do in the transfer window – including at striker – where he should target a former Chelsea academy graduate.
Wolves must look at signing Tammy Abraham
Tammy Abraham, a striker for AS Roma, has reportedly been placed on the transfer list, and the Italian powerhouse will entertain offers of about £20 million, according to the Telegraph.
Numerous Premier League teams have taken notice of this, including Everton, West Ham United, and Aston Villa, who are all monitoring the striker.
Wolves, who are in desperate need of an Abraham-like number nine right now, need to be all over this deal.
The 26-year-old, who academy coach Stephen Elliott once referred to as a “goal machine,” displayed his goal-scoring prowess in the 2021–2022 season as his 26 goals across all competitions propelled Jose Mourinho’s team to a Europa Conference League victory.Even though his play has declined over the past two seasons—he has only scored 10 goals in 66 appearances—a return to the Premier League at Molineux could help him regain his “phenomenal” scoring ability.
Gary O’Neil could transform Tammy Abraham into a machine
To head his line at Wolves, O’Neil is searching for a complete forward.
Those duties were split between Matheus Cunha and Hwang-Hee Chan the previous season, but O’Neil requires a player who can drop deeper to link plays, hold up the ball expertly, and make quick movements in behind.
Abraham, who has been compared to Didier Drogba, is 6 feet 4 inches tall and possesses a quick pace. He might be just what Wolves need to lead their front line.
The former Aston Villa striker demonstrated his threat as an aerial beast but also his ability to shoot opportunities, placing him in the top 10% for non-penalty xG and the top 8% for aerial duels won in the 2022–23 Serie A season.
It is crucial for Wolves that they have
season, O’Neil’s reliance on Cunha and Hwang to serve as the main point created a noticeable gap in the narrative.
But Abraham’s arrival would ease any concerns as the Old Gold would get a top-tier striker for an incredible £20 million.
