Matt Maher: The silence is far from golden for Wolves fans

Now more than a week since Wolves announced their season ticket prices we are witnessing a stand-off

On one side are supporters, united like rarely before in frustration and anger, appealing ever louder for the club to reconsider the decision to ramp up prices to levels some simply cannot afford while posing a moral dilemma even for those who can.

On the other side you have the club, largely silent and seemingly of the belief if they sit tight and stay quiet the trouble will eventually blow over. You will find few observers prepared to bet it will.

Jeff Shi, the chairman of the club, is caught in the center of the storm and, whether he likes it or not, plays the villain in the play.

Type Shi’s name into any social media search engine right now and the results are not complementary

In one such photo, which went viral late last week, his face was superimposed on the body of former Wolves CEO Jez Moxey. The argument that the season ticket increase is Shi’s Pie and a Pint moment has been made several times in the last few days. This alludes to the notorious 2007 choice to grant the South Bank to visiting Albion supporters for an FA Cup match—a mistake from which Moxey’s standing among supporters and reputation never fully recovered.

It’s true that the Pie and a Pint incident was a grave mistake of judgment and a painful experience for Wolves fans; the humiliation increased when the Baggies went on to win the match and they had to watch their opponents celebrate on a field they hold in high regard.
