This season, Gary O’Neil’s Wolverhampton Wanderers have suffered from several awful decisions, which have included matches against Manchester United, Newcastle, Luton, and Sheffield United this past weekend.
Wolverhampton Wanderers lost points over the weekend due to yet another controversial officiating performance. However, Gary O’Neil has disclosed that he has had a direct conversation with referee chief
From the first game of the season, when they were denied a penalty at Manchester United, to the most recent one, when Fabio Silva was found to have fouled George Baldock in the 100th minute of the Premier League match against Sheffield United, O’Neil has witnessed his team lose a number of calls.
Oliver Norwood scored the spot-kick for the Blades, giving them their first victory of the season. This left O’Neil perplexed at how previous call against Wolves had gone as well.
“It’s not a penalty,” O’Neil said following the match. Almost no interaction. One another awful choice. I don’t know why he feels compelled to provide it. It’s not about you, so stop and take your time. If you make a glaringly apparent mistake, VAR will point it out to you.
O’Neill, who had backing from players like Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker, revealed on the Wolves Weekly podcast today that he talked with PGMOL CEO Webb the day following the 2-1 loss.
“On Sunday, Howard and I had a nice, candid talk about how to attempt to make things better. I appreciate where Howard is coming from; he’s trying to manage his own group as well, and they’re clearly facing a lot of strain right now.
However, based on our conversation, I’m sure they’re making an effort to turn things around. To ensure that there are fewer mistakes, they are attempting to implement procedures and make adjustments.
“They don’t need that either—they don’t want to be making mistakes every weekend, having me call on a Sunday, and then having clubs issue comments. They thus recognise that the things that have mostly gone against us this year probably shouldn’t have.
It’s likely acknowledged, in my opinion, that many of the judgements that have worked against us were flawed. They are no longer with us, therefore there is nothing we can do about it.
We won’t use that as a justification because other individuals are aware of what transpired. All we do is what is necessary. Since I’m not a referee and the staff must officiate some training sessions and small-sided games, I’ve always talked to the boys. In fact, we even rehearse it during training.
“I simply yell at the guys all the time, ‘I don’t care if I’m right or not. Simply answer; it makes no difference who I give it to—the next ball is coming in, whether I’m giving it to the yellows or the reds, and whether I’m correct or not.
“After speaking with Howard yesterday, I genuinely believe they are attempting to move things in the right direction.”
Arsenal published a statement supporting Mikel Arteta’s vehement criticism of the game’s officials because they felt so mistreated by the goal given to Newcastle United on Saturday.
