Wolves boss names what he ‘must do

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil admits he ‘must do better’ after a rare moment during the win over Tottenham.

After he couldn’t contain his excitement after Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, Gary O’Neil said he would need to exercise more self control going forward. The head coach left his technical area to celebrate Mario Lemina’s winning goal in the 97th minute, running down towards the corner flag in defiance of Premier League protocol.

Considering the remarkable magnitude of the Wolves’ comeback, O’Neil’s celebration may have been excessive, but it was still quite understandable. While many, including journalists, would have appreciated seeing the manager so happy and engaged with the fan support, managers still have oversight duties.

“That was probably my biggest celebration! I don’t know what happened, really, just lots of energy and I couldn’t stand still,” O’Neil said in the post-match press conference, with a giggle. “I had to run somewhere and we’re not allowed on the pitch, so the side of the pitch was one of the last options. I’ll try and control myself better in the future,” O’Neil continued.

Wolves’ famous 2-1 triumph over Manchester City at the end of September marks the team’s second home victory against a top-four opponent this season. Since Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal still haven’t made it to Molineux this season, there are still more chances to achieve outcomes along these lines.
