Carlos Corberan expressed his appreciation to Albion for filling the team’s obvious attacking requirements during the January transfer window.
The Baggies strengthened their roster this term by adding three forwards during the winter transfer window, following some trial and error with availability.
Though the team is currently searching the free-agent market for acceptable choices, head coach Corberan was unable to obtain the central midfield cover he sought. This is happening at a time when the club has limited financial flexibility due to Guochuan Lai’s ongoing takeover.
One of the new signings, Andi Weimann, celebrated his home debut with a thrilling late winner against Blues, which he helped to create as a substitute alongside Mikey Johnston and Callum Marshall, two other loanees.
“Unfortunately, we managed a lot of injuries in one part of the season, injuries we didn’t expect, and some moments (Jeremy Sarmiento recall) we didn’t expect either,” Corberan stated.
“However, I believe that the club has worked very hard to make up for this and meet our needs.”
With the three available to them, Albion appears much more competitive, and Daryl Dike is also pressing for his first Championship start since his comeback. The week after next, Grady Diangana will return from the African Cup of Nations.
“It is crucial to utilise every player available – as football matches involve more than just the starting lineup,” the Spanish player continued. However, the Saturday match demonstrated that players are not the only ones who impact games; starting players also have an impact.
Because of this, demonstrating your level at all times—whether you’re starting the game or just warming up—is all that matters. We have more possibilities to compete in the games the better our bench choices are.
The 32-year-old forward Weimann made a lasting impact against Blues with a poacher’s finish following some outstanding movement.
Such an attempt, Corberan said, was typical of a seasoned goalscorer. “I believe he performed remarkable movement and an amazing finish only in the level of players with a lot of skill to score goals,” he stated.
The former Villa player’s versatility as a forward has already been praised by the head coach, who was eager to bring him on last month.
Before youngster Marshall, a 19-year-old on loan from West Ham, chose a deft ball to allow Darnell Furlong to cross for the game-winning Austrian, Johnston’s purposeful run from Celtic’s loan addition opened up the winner.
