The North East-raised midfielder would eventually only manage eighteen competitive games while leading the Black Cats, winning only three of them before his employment was terminated. However, it was during those games that he gained recognition from supporters beyond the EFL.
The unpleasant atmosphere on Wearside at that period was extensively recorded in Netflix’s ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’ series, which captured a great deal of the drama and misjudgments that transpired behind the scenes of the team’s horrific second division campaign in 2017–18.
Sunderland has experienced a rollercoaster of divergent fortunes since its demotion from the top level during the 2016–17 Premier League season. Following back-to-back relegations, the team spent four years in League One.
Throughout the first half of that season, Grayson was in charge. On game days, cameras were frequently visible in and around the stadium and training area.
There are other football-related documentaries that follow a team; Manchester City, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Leeds are just a few of the teams that have released documentaries that focus on specific seasons. Wrexham now has a successful series on Disney+, while Liverpool is recording a show that will air at the conclusion of this season.
Simon Grayson’s verdict on football documentaries
The former Sunderland manager had to push back occasionally when the filming process infringed upon his personal space because he did not particularly enjoy certain portions of it.
Giving fans more depth and insight into the action behind the scenes while avoiding overstepping the bounds of what can be considered improper is obviously a delicate balancing act.
Although these documentaries have generally been well received and serve as a means of recalling specific seasons and players, the circumstances at Sunderland during that particular season also make it challenging.
Without as much film, Grayson’s perspective might also be altered, which clarifies his position. In the EFL, he has been a successful coach, especially with Leeds and Preston.
