‘I’m going to throw up’ – Ryan Reynolds reacts after being told how much money Wrexham have lost since Hollywood star’s takeover with Rob McElhenney
Ryan Reynolds felt like he was going to “throw up” after finding out how much money he and co-owner Rob McElhenney have lost since purchasing Wrexham.
The owners of the club discovered that since taking over the Welsh team two years ago, they have lost $12 million (£10 million).
After purchasing Wrexham for an estimated £2 million, the Hollywood stars watched as the team was promoted from the National League to League Two, all the while experiencing a phenomenal surge in global popularity.
In the documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, it was discovered that the owners are still losing money despite a significant increase in ticket and shirt sales and the development of a significant social media presence.
Upon learning that they have lost about $12 million since purchasing the team, Reynolds declared on the show, “I’m going to throw up.”
Advisor Shaun Harvey responded, “The value that’s coming from the global appeal we’ve been able to create is going to offset those additional costs that we’ve created,” to McElhenney’s question on when he can expect to make money from Wrexham. The ability of the public to recognise the worth of Welcome to Wrexham is the main aspect of the campaign that will alter. They are able to recognise the worth of the profile being created. At that point, more sponsorship income is potentially produced.”
On Saturday, Wrexham will play Mansfield in the FA Cup. The two League Two teams will face off in this encounter; Wrexham is currently in third place in the standings, while Mansfield is one point behind in fourth.
