Shaun Harvey, who has been an advisor at Wrexham, has finally been appointed to the board – but Ryan Reynolds had to use an EFL loophole due to his roles at Bradford and Leeds
Despite having taken Leeds United and Bradford City into administration, Ryan Reynolds has finally appointed Shaun Harvey as a director.
Harvey, who is well-liked at Wrexham, first joined the club in 2020 as an advisor to the board as part of his consultancy firm. And he’s currently on the board thanks to an EFL loophole.
Under current rules, EFL clubs are unable to appoint individuals to the board if they have been involved in two clubs that went into administration. And Harvey falls into that category.
According to the EFL website, a person cannot be appointed if they were “a director of a football club that has suffered two insolvency events since June 2004 or separate football clubs that have each suffered an insolvency event since June 2004.”
Wrexham, on the other hand, was able to appoint him to the board due to a loophole. Harvey’s association with Bradford predates 2004, implying that he has only been involved in one insolvency event in the view of the EFL.
Harvey was with the Bantams when they were promoted to the Premier League in 1999, but after the club went into administration in 2002, they narrowly avoided liquidation by virtually mortgaging practically all of their assets.
Harvey would leave Leeds United, where he had been chief executive for nine years. Harvey left the club in 2011 after the club went into administration in 2007.
He was the Football League’s chief executive before establishing a consultancy firm that took him to Wrexham.
