Wrexham forward and former Premier League star Steven Fletcher explained how a phone call with co-owner Ryan Reynolds solidified his decision to sign with the Welsh side
Ryan Reynold’s notoriety knows no bounds, especially when it comes to signing players to Wrexham. Case in point, forward Steven Fletcher.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the 36-year-old explained how a call with one of the co-owners of the Welsh club ultimately convinced him to join in September 2023, despite offers from other clubs. And though Fletcher was already leaning towards heading to the Racecourse Ground, his conversation with Hollywood superstar Reynolds opened his eyes to the possibilities that came with playing for Wrexham.
“Obviously when Ryan called as well, that did help,” Fletcher recalled. “Come up with Los Angeles and I’m not going to lie, I’ve not really got many friends in Los Angeles …
“Obviously I’d had the conversation already with Jonah and the manager [Phil Parkinson] and obviously when the phone rang and it says Los Angeles,” the forward continued. “And I kind of thought – I put two and two together.”
The former Premier League striker revealed that his conversation with Reynolds was not too long, but it gave the experienced forward an idea of what to expect. Ultimately, speaking with the Hollywood A-lister helped him make his final decision to sign with a side that’s attempting to get another promotion this season.
“He was just basically saying obviously what the, how the club had been last season … it’s Ryan Reynolds, how could you say no? Let’s be honest,” Fletcher said.
“Yeah, had the conversation and it was quite short, to be honest. It was just, ‘We’d love to have you here and be part of the club.’ And I was already made up my mind, to be honest.
“But that did, I’m not gonna lie, that did it gives you a little confidence, a little, probably, a little boost to say, ‘Yeah, go on then!'”
