So bad Wrexham FC keeper ruled out for four months’

Lainton, who started only six games as Wrexham won the National League title last season, has been troubled by injury over the last two years, breaking his wrist and suffering concussion.

However, a knee injury kept him out for months, and the 34-year-old shot-stopper underwent surgery, which Parkinson described as “very successful.”

“Rob had an operation, and it was very successful,” Parkinson added. “It’s been a difficult period for Rob. He’s seen three different specialists, but we’re hoping that this will solve the problem, even though he’ll be out for four months.”

With former England international Ben Foster retiring barely a month into Wrexham’s return to the Football League, the number one spot at The STóK Cae Ras has been an issue this season.

Parkinson signed Arsenal custodian Arthur Okonkwo on loan from Mikel Arteta’s side, but he hurt his jaw in last month’s 2-2 draw at Harrogate.

He had minor surgery and is expected to recover in weeks rather than months, which means veteran Mark Howard, who maintained a clean sheet in the 3-0 FA Cup second-round win over Yeovil Town, will keep his position in goal for Saturday’s home match against Colchester United.

And Parkinson stated that a number of players on the injury list are making good progress as the Reds prepare for a demanding festive schedule.

Ryan Barnett, Anthony Forde, Eoghan O’Connell, Aaron Hayden, Jordan Tunnicliffe, and Steven Fletcher, as well as keepers Okonkwo and Lainton, are all out.

“Having players back will be a real boost to the squad, especially at this busy and exciting time of the season,” Parkinson said of his team, which is second in League Two, six points behind champions Stockport County.

Parkinson will have fond memories of Saturday’s game against Colchester.

His first managerial position was at Colchester, where he took the Essex club to the Championship for the first time in its history.

“I have so many fantastic memories from my time at Colchester where I learnt so much as a young manager,” Parkinson added.
