If Wrexham’s owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds really want to see their team in the Premier League, they should fire manager Phil Parkinson.
Former Wrexham athlete Sinclair discusses Red Dragons
claims Parkinson must leave the Premier League since the manager is doing nothing wrong but lacks elite experience.
The former Chelsea defender, who later in his career worked on his trade with Wrexham, talked extensively about the Welsh club’s situation with financial firm Stocklytics.
Though the Red Dragons have advanced well under Parkinson, Sinclair thinks it could be time to let go of the now-55-year-old in the future. The former Jamaican international is concerned about his lack of Premier League experience, but he also wants the team to avoid making snap decisions.
“Along the way, I think that (changing the manager) is a natural transition and something that happens as a football club gets bigger,” Sinclair said in an interview with financial firm Stocklytics. The ideal candidate for the position of manager should resemble the football team.
“You consider Wayne Rooney at Birmingham City; I suppose it was the primary driver for the player’s employment. Other than his profile, I can’t think of any other reason why they would want to move on to Wayne Rooney and someone without managerial experience given what John Eustace was doing.
That does occur occasionally. However, I believe they have an experienced Football League manager in Phil Parkinson. As they move up the ranks, I still think he has a lot to give.
“His resume isn’t excellent until they go to the Championship or Premier League. He hasn’t held many Championship or Premier League managerial positions. At that point, they could try to have different people in charge of the football team. Well, for me. Parkinson is doing a great job, and I hope he can keep doing that and that the club’s success will boost his stock.
Parkinson guided the Red Dragons into the English Football League following their promotion from the National League in the previous season. Wrexham is five points behind the lead in the League Two standings, having played nearly half of the season.
Sinclair believes that the Premier League ambition is at least “ten years” away, so it’s reasonable to assume that Parkinson won’t be happening anytime soon.
The Red Dragons want to get closer to first-place Stockport when they play Accrington Stanley on Saturday. Now that Paul Mullin is back in the mix for Parkinson and his team, all eyes will be on him.
