Although on paper, Bolton should win and go into this as favourites, we know that football is both not played on paper and can be rather unpredictable at times.
This unpredictable nature was on display on Saturday at Adams Park as Wycombe upset high-flying Peterborough United 5-2 to cause one of the biggest upsets of the weekend in the EFL. Considering the danger they displayed in front of goal, it’s possible that this will be remembered as their best performance of the year.
Bolton may find that the game is harder than they initially anticipated as a result, and they will be trying to recover from a somewhat disappointing weekend’s outcome. That does seem harsh, though, considering that we played the final sixty minutes with ten men and rallied from behind to draw 1-1 with Northampton.
Nonetheless, they still dropped points on leaders Portsmouth and will be looking to close the gap with a win over Wycombe on Tuesday night.
Matt Bloomfield will be hoping that his side can prove that the performance against Peterborough was no fluke and that they can build on that result and move further away from the relegation zone.
Two of The Real EFL’s writing team give their opinion on how the game will play out…
“Wycombe will be looking to utilise their momentum from their shock win over Peterborough on Saturday and fans will be hoping that the performance wasn’t a one-off.
They do however face an incredibly tough task in the form of Bolton who performed admirably to gain a point against Northampton despite playing with ten men for the majority of the match.
Although I do believe that Wycombe’s win wasn’t exactly a one-off, I cannot see how they get past Bolton here. With a far stronger defence than that of Peterborough they’ll be hard to break down and then could go onto easily catch the hosts on the counter.
It should be a great game given the results at the weekend, but Bolton should be a class above.”
Bolton Wanderers 3-1 Wycombe Wanderers
“Wycombe are coming into this fixture off the back of one of their results of the season. Their hammering of promotion hopefuls Peterborough will give Matt Bloomfield and his men a huge confidence boost after what has been a difficult season. The weekend’s victory also secured the club’s first back-to-back wins since September. With only one loss since Boxing Day, they seem to really have turned a corner, even though draws have been their forte in that run.
Tuesday night sees the Berkshire outfit face another promotion challenger however, and they may not be as easy to beat as Posh turned out to be. Bolton currently sit in a great position in their fight for the automatics, only one point behind Derby County in second and have two games in hand over the Rams. With their record being four unbeaten going into this, Ian Evatt’s men will want to keep that run going, but with Wycombe showing a better side to themselves recently and the momentum that will bring, it will not be anywhere near as easy as the home side may want. However, it is the home side who I am going with here.”
