Attacker Beryly Lubala of Burton Albion is expected to sign with Wycombe Wanderers on a free transfer, according to Paul O’Rourke of Football Insider.
Three days ago, Beryly Lubala’s contract with the Brewers expired, and since then, another League One team has taken steps to attempt to finalise a deal for him.
The report claims that the Chairboys are about to close a deal for the winger, however no agreement has been reached as of yet. Transfermarkt estimates that the player is worth £170,000 on the open market.
After leaving, Lubala turned to X to express his gratitude to the Brewers, saying in the post that he had hoped to stay with the team but things had not worked out. This follows manager Martin Paterson’s announcement to BBC Sport Derby on Saturday that the player had declined to play against Cambridge United before his contract expired.
“I met with the player twice on Thursday. In both instances, my assistants attended the meetings. As a result, I met with Gary Mills and John Dreyer once, and the player stated that he did not want to play the game today.”
During his 26 appearances for his team this season, the former Birmingham City player scored six goals and provided three assists. Since leaving St Andrews in July 2019, he has had stints at Crawley Town, Colchester United, and Northampton Town.
Currently ranked 19th in League One, Wycombe is eight points above the drop zone and trails Burton by only one point with a game remaining. Lubala recently scored in a match against the team he wants to join.
With five goals, the striker has more goals from open play than any other member of the Chairboys team. He will compete with Sam Vokes, a former Burnley striker who has four goals this season, for a spot in the starting 11.
In addition, Brewers manager Paterson disclosed in the interview that the team had extended the player’s contract by 70% before to its expiration, but the player had previously informed the team that he intended to stay.
Lubala is a gifted football player who will give Wycombe, a team struggling to survive, a genuine sense of class and quality. The circumstances behind Burton’s departure will disappoint his supporters, and it’s unlikely that the player will receive a warm welcome
upon return to the Pirelli Stadium.
The Brewers however will feel they’ve signed a suitable replacement for the outgoing forward in the shape of Manchester United loanee Joe Hugill.
