You can’t haunt Wycombe, Alfie told#

With just one victory in their past seventeen League One games, Wycombe enters their next game at Cheltenham Town on Saturday, February 3, just four points above the relegation spots.

Had they not battled back to earn a point in their most recent match, a 2-2 draw at home against bottom club Fleetwood Town, things would have gotten much worse.

The Chairboys had a terrible first half performance and trailed by two goals before the visitors had a man sent off, which gave Wanderers the chance to score twice and escape yet another humiliating loss.

With two games against the Gloucestershire club in less than a month, the pressure is back on for the trip to Cheltenham.

Despite winning both games last season—1-0 at home and 3-0 at Adams Park—thanks to goals from Wycombe’s archrival Alfie May, Cheltenham’s victories over Wanderers were their only ones in the previous eleven encounters.

Even more remarkable is the Chairboys’ record at the imaginatively named Completely-Suzuki Stadium in Cheltenham. In their last six visits, they have only suffered one loss, four draws, and four victories.

The clubs’ games have historically been high-scoring affairs, particularly at Adams Park, where the last three meetings have resulted in an incredible 25 goals scored, or more than eight goals per game!

Despite a recent uptick in performance, the Robins, who have spent the majority of the previous ten years in League Two and were even demoted to the National League in 2016, are facing relegation this season.

After Wade Elliott was fired in October, manager Darrell Clarke took over, and since then, he has led them to thrilling victories at home against Oxford United and Portsmouth, two teams vying for promotion.

On the last day of the 2013–14 season, Wycombe famously stayed up at the expense of Bristol Rovers, who were relegated to the National League under Clarke’s management. The Rovers had just won at Torquay United.

Curtis Thompson, who was instrumental in Wycombe’s advancement to the Championship four years prior, is a former Chairboys favourite and is a member of the Cheltenham team.
