York failed to manage a shot on target in their first-half performance and headed into the half-time break 1-0 down after Jake Charles’ opener, before goals from Ollie Pearce and Marvin Armstrong helped City to victory at the seaside.
Hinshelwood wasn’t overly satisfied with the performance he saw, and feels that improvement is needed for the Minstermen heading into their Vanarama National League campaign.
“You want it to be the perfect display and it certainly wasn’t that,” Hinshelwood admitted.
“That first-half was pretty poor to be honest, I thought that we were laboured in our possession, our intensity that we played at was nowhere near what we needed it to be.
“We started some younger players, but there was enough experience to support them. Fortunately, the first half didn’t turn out the way we had hoped, and things improved in the second.
“The second half was a little better; it could have been a little more decisive if not for their goalkeeper’s outstanding saves and our occasional carelessness in the final third.
“Full credit to them [Whitby], it was a good test for us and we knew that it would be coming here, that’s why we wanted this fixture.
“They sort of kept us honest, like I said we would have liked it to look a bit more like the second-half throughout the game.
“Ultimately, we’ve come through with no injuries and good minutes into the legs for the players.”
Hinshelwood would go on to explain the decision-making process behind his team selection, which included 60 minutes for eight of the starting 11 players, which saw York end the game with a completely new eleven for their second pre-season fixture.
In the upcoming preseason games, the City manager intends to see all of his players play for 90 minutes. He will also begin forming alliances among his players.
According to Hinshelwood, the goal is to introduce some variation into the game. To be fair, he explained, he tried to give some of the new players a head start at home and gave everyone who started in the home games an idea of what to expect from them.”Some of our players have sustained partial injuries, therefore they required an extended warm-up period instead of playing the last thirty minutes.
“Although several elements are involved, the two games were eventually caused by.
“After this, once we’ve got 45 and 60, we’ve got to start looking at shaping up the team and partnerships really.
“Getting into the 90 minutes, so very soon we’ll be looking at outlining what our team is going to look like.
“In the main, we’ve got another game into the players and a different test to what Saturday was.
“We probably had a lot of the ball for the second-half. I’m just a bit disappointed that we couldn’t capitalise and make it a bit more emphatic, we got into some good areas in the final third and couldn’t quite finish them off on the day.2
Hinshelwood wasn’t too pleased with the first-half performance, but did heap praise onto the second-half impact from his squad, in particular Dipo Akinyemi who he labelled as a ‘menace’ for opposition defences.
“It was exactly the response we wanted, I think that they could sense that I wasn’t happy with how it looked in the first-half and it was exactly the response I wanted from them in the second-half,” Hinshelwood enthused.
“It was exactly the hunger and the desire that we want, we want to try and regain the ball high up the pitch if we can and I thought we did that really well at times.
“Dipo in particular looked the fittest he’s looked since I came to the club really, he was brushing people aside at times and looked a real handful and a menace. That was really pleasing to see.
“I’m a bit disappointed that Ty [Tyrese Sinclair] couldn’t finish off some of the chances, because two in two for a player like Ty would have given his confidence the world of good.
“Billy Chadwick and Joe [Felix] showed signs of a good little partnership on the right hand side, so there were lots of positives and good things to watch in the second-half.
“Still, it’s all about the build-up to Southend really, do we think that if we play like that in the second-half when going to Southend, will it be enough? No, I though that at times Saturday was good and there were lots to be positive about, but was that display good enough? No.
“It’s all about keeping on layering and keep on taking bits from each game, improving for the lead up to Southend.”
