York City confirms deal with York born star

Adam Hinshelwood has confirmed that he plans on sitting down with McMillan to discuss a potential contract, should co-owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla agree to finance the deal, with York’s squad already large.

McMillan has so far featured in both of York’s pre-season friendlies against Sheffield United and Whitby Town, which ended in a 2-1 defeat and a 2-1 victory, whilst training with the first-team too.

The winger began his career in the academy of Leeds United, before making the switch to Fleetwood Town in 2021.

McMillan was born in York, went to Joseph Rowntree School, and played junior football for Haxby Town FC.

He would score one goal in three games on his brief loan with Radcliffe in the Northern Premier League before leaving the Cod Army when his contract expired.

McMillan would earn a move to Wigan Athletic, where has featured in their under-21’s for the past year, before being released upon the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

Now a free agent, Hinshelwood is keen to offer McMillan a deal to stay at York.

Hinshelwood affirmed, “He’s done so much good stuff right now, so yeah, it’s one to sit down with Matt and Julie-Anne and see where we are budget-wise.”

We’ll investigate the possibility of adding another player—a player I truly like—if there is room.

Although he made a terrific run in behind and the ball wasn’t nearly hit into that area, he is a sharp player and his movement was decent today.

We’re going to talk soon since I truly enjoy what I’m seeing in him.

“Only Max is the trialist that we know, I’m not sure if we can mention the others names.

“He’s the only one who has stayed, there might be scope for a couple of other trialists to come in for Saturday but I don’t think we’re a million miles away from what we need.

“It’s a case of speaking to the board and seeing where we are financially.”

Hinshelwood also provided an update on the futures of Levi Andoh, Olly Dyson and Thierry Latty-Fairweather, who all are yet to feature in pre-season, with the City boss confirming that the latter two have been told that they are not a part of his plans.

Hinshelwood admitted: “I like to be honest about where we are. Levi is coming back from injury, that’s why he’s not featured.

“He hasn’t appeared because he’s probably two weeks away from participating completely.

We had open discussions with Thierry and Olly as soon as the season concluded, during which I stated that I would be bringing players in and that they weren’t going to be a part of my plans.

To be fair to the boys, who have trained and worked extremely hard, that is where we are with them.

“I try to be honest with them and tell them as soon as the season finished that I want to work with the group that I see can take the club forward.”

“I informed them that would be the situation, and guys stepping into their positions demonstrate that’s how

Hinshelwood also confirmed that City hadn’t escaped the Whitby Town friendly without casualty, with Ashley Nathaniel-George struggling with his groin.

However, Hinshelwood hopes that the winger will be recovered in time for Saturday’s pre-season friendly with Grimsby Town at the LNER Community Stadium (3pm).

“Ashley was feeling his groin a little bit, but I think it’s been a very heavy week.

“ You’ve got to take that into consideration as well, the lads have been putting some miles into their legs and I think it showed at times.

“With the little cameos for 30 minutes, I think the fitness did show towards the end and they’ve been working hard, so they will have gone into the game a bit leggy.

“I think it’s just a bit of fatigue from a tough week for Ashley, so I’m hoping that there is nothing too sinister and the group will be ready to go Saturday.”
