Everton managerial target Wayne Rooney missed DC United’s training session on Friday, 6 October, per the Washington Post.
The American newspaper reported on its website that there are doubts over whether or not he will be returning next season.
United’s game against New York City on Saturday is the regular season finale and Rooney’s understood to have had a conflict behind the scenes at the capital club.

Rooney’s name has been thrown in the hat on numerous occasions and it seems like this time it actually could happen.
Sean Dyche has endured a wretched start to the season and defeat in the game against Bournemouth on Saturday could be the final nail in the coffin.777 Partners are looking to complete a takeover and they will want a fresh start and someone who’s not already losing support of the fanbase.
The supporters were singing Dyche’s praises after he kept them up, but if they’re going to continue playing like relegation candidates, things will turn sour very soon.
Rooney is in the United States so 777, a Miami-based firm could schedule meetings with him there.
He will not be a tough name to sell to the fans either and proved that he can perform against the odds as he did with Derby County.
It remains to be seen if Rooney will be the option the new owners go for but he could be the most sensible one, at least until the end of the season.
In other Everton news, a condition has now emerged on Sean Dyche being sacked amid trouble behind the scenes at Goodison Park.
