Matilda and Newcastle Jets forward Larissa Crummer will undergo surgery on Saturday morning.
The 23-year-old is suspected to have suffered from a broken tibia after a nasty collision during the first half of her side’s win in Adelaide.
Crummer, who was chasing down a high ball when she collided with Reds keeper, Sarah Willacy inside the penalty area.
Staying down in the box, everyone watching was stunned with no-one on the Newcastle bench moving.
Replays and photos of the incident showed the moment of impact and it didn’t look good with paramedics providing on-field treatment to stabilise her lower leg in a splint before taking the distressed striker to hospital.
Well wishes from those across the football community flooded social media with Crummer taking to Instagram this morning to thank everyone.
Newcastle has flown Larissa’s mother to Adelaide to be with her daughter and will provide whatever it can to help facilitate her recovery.
The club has said: “It’s too early to make any firm assessments on a timeframe for the injury, for which Larissa will undergo surgery on Saturday morning”.
A distraught Craig Deans pledged the support of the coaching staff and playing group.
“It’s a devastating blow for Larissa, and us as a staff and all the girls will do everything and anything we can to help her get through this injury,” he said.
“Larissa had been enjoying her football in Newcastle, it’s never easy coming to a new club but she’d settled in well and is a much-loved member of the squad.
“We are all devastated.”
