Blackburn Rovers have certainly been hit hard by free exits over the past couple of years.
Important players like Ben Brereton-Diaz, Darragh Lenihan, Ryan Nyambe, and Joe Rothwell have left Ewood Park on free transfers after their contracts expired in the last two years alone, despite the fact that their impact on the team should have earned Rovers significant compensation.
After securing new long-term contracts for several of their important players over the course of the previous year or so, Blackburn appears to have learned from that experience and will take precautions to prevent experiencing that kind of dissatisfaction in the future.
At the conclusion of this season, a few players, nevertheless, still have contracts that expire at Ewood Park, thus they may be free to leave for nothing.
In light of this, we’ve examined the two Blackburn Rovers players who, as of right now, have the option to quit the team for free.
After spending the 2016–17 season on loan with Blackburn, Gallagher rejoined the team permanently in the summer after leaving Southampton.
Since then, the striker has consistently been a part of Rovers’ starting lineup, and even if he isn’t the most prolific goal scorer for a player in his position, his record of wins when he does play has generally been better.
Though he is one among the club’s top earners, the 28-year-old has also been hindered by injuries on several occasions at Ewood Park, so when his contract expires at the end of this season, Rovers may want to consider that.
Although there are undoubtedly benefits to Gallagher, there may be worries that his contract will expire this summer. That being said, if Blackburn decides they want to keep Gallagher, they do have the option to extend his contract by a another year, until the summer of 2025.
After being released by Preston at the age of 18, Dolan signed a free transfer to Blackburn in the summer of 2020.
Within the first year of his debut at Ewood Park, the attacker became a mainstay in Blackburn’s starting lineup, earning him a contract extension that would last until the summer of 2024.
Naturally, that contract is nearing its end, and Rovers are negotiating a new one for the forward. Director of Football Gregg Broughton recently stated that he was optimistic that negotiations would move forward after Dolan completed his transfer to a new agency at the beginning of October. Therefore, the question of whether or not the 21-year-old will sign a new deal could soon become more evident.
Once more, though, in the unlikely event that Dolan decides not to sign a new contract with the team, Blackburn does have the safety net of the ability to extend his contract by an additional year.
