Bristol bears now sign contract with Irish-qualified centre

Australian-born back who played youth football for both England and Ireland, with family ties to Roscommon and Ireland
Piers O’Conor, an Irish-qualified centre from Bristol Bears in the English Premiership, has joined Connacht.

After serving as Ashton Gate’s coach for six years under previous Connacht coach Pat Lam, O’Conor, 28, will join the province in the summer.

O’Conor is primarily a centre, but he has also played on the wings and at fullback. O’Conor, an Australian by birth, advanced through the youth ranks by playing for the England U20s and Ireland U19s. Despite not having received a senior international cap, he is eligible for Ireland due to his grandfather’s Irish ancestry, which includes Roscommon and Dublin.

Pete Wilkins, the head coach, said, “We’re thrilled to be welcoming Piers to Connacht Rugby starting next season.” “He’s an incredible athlete with a plethora of Premiership and European rugby experience, and his adaptability will wonderfully enhance our current options among the outside backs.”
