Joe Williams of Bristol City is apparently being targeted by Preston North End for a summer transfer.
The midfield player has not yet signed a new deal at Ashton Gate. Williams joined the Robins in the summer of 2020 after being rumoured to have cost £1.2 million from Wigan Athletic. He has since made 106 appearances for the team. In 40 Championship appearances during the previous season, he contributed five assists. According to Bristol Live, he is being considered by North End.
Williams, who has become a City regular over the past two seasons, has scored twice in his Robins career. A hamstring injury marred his debut year at the club. Following the season, Williams and Bristol City, who placed 11th overall and were one point poorer than PNE, said that negotiations for a new contract were still going on.
Originating from Liverpool, the 27-year-old began his professional career at Everton. He spent time on loan at Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers before joining the Latics on a permanent contract in 2019. In all, Williams has participated in 213 Championship games. Interestingly, he praised the Deepdale club when previewing City’s January trip to Preston.
“That’s right, listen, I think Preston is a good team. They came to our place and I thought they were really good; they started off really well. I think the manager is really good, and they are obviously going through a bit of a rough time right now. But yeah, they will be at home, and I think they might want to come after us and frustrate us,” Williams responded.
