Bristol Bears confirm talks

Centre James Williams made 25 appearances for the Bears last season after establishing himself in the first team

The most recent reports state that multiple Welsh United Rugby Championship clubs are scouting James Williams, the playmaker in the middle for the Bristol Bears.

Williams, 27, left Championship team Hartpury in the summer of 2022 to join Bristol Bears, where he quickly established himself as a vital midfield pivot in the number twelve shirt. With the Bears bursting offensively towards the end of the 2023–24 season, his play towards the end of the season allowed him to keep former French superstar Virimi Vakatawa off the starting lineup and won him a new deal with the team. He is a vital player for the Bears because of his ability to jump in at fly-half and goal kick, according to director of rugby Pat Lam highlighting his incredibly low error count as a key superstrength.

Williams, who played for the Barbarians against Samoa last summer under Lam, is in many ways a perfect Bears back, he is a decent strike runner, good distributor and has a strong kicking game – making him a triple threat.
Although Williams does not currently have a cap, he is eligible to participate for both Wales and England by virtue of his mother Yana, who won cross-country titles for her nation in the 1980s. Williams has expressed his desire to compete internationally. Williams remarked, “It is a big desire of mine, although I know that at 27 I am not the youngest.” “When I was 19, I went to a camp with the Wales Under-20s, but I didn’t get capped. I adore hanging out with famous people, and I never imagined that I would be where I am now. You never know if I put in the performances. I’m just driven to play to the best of my abilities and am having a great time.
