However, the 2023–24 campaign has showcased the 25-year-old’s versatility as he can also operate out wide as a full-back or wing-back. With 44 games under his belt, he has contributed four goals and four assists, ranking Town 21st in League Two.
Grimsby Town brought Clifton through the youth setup at Blundell Park and barring a season-long loan with non-league side Grantham Town, the midfielder has been at the club his entire career.
Clifton has made 267 appearances with the Mariners in all competitions. He has contributed 25 goals and 12 assists over that period, playing a variety of roles mostly in midfield.
Since Clifton’s contract is up this summer, he has the opportunity to start again and find new direction by staying at wing-back permanently. A large portion of Clifton’s recent success has come in this broader capacity.
In the middle, the former Wales U21 international has seen his energy and work-rate serve him best. That is missed somewhat when he plays out wide, but the summer provides a chance for them to recruit someone to take up that mantle while Clifton can make a more permanent move out wide.
With the energy to bomb up and down the wing, Clifton is able to engage in combat with attackers and yet have the endurance to return to his defensive responsibilities.
Whichever position he plays, Clifton may still be useful to Grimsby Town and Dave Artell. His dedication to the Mariners is unquestionable given his lengthy association with the team, and his adaptability and work ethic are highly valuable assets on the field.
However, a prolonged stint at wing-back could allow him to utilise his abilities and gain a spot in the starting lineup.
