Chairman gives brutal Darren Moore verdict after ex-Owls boss sacked’

Moore, 49, was recently sacked by Huddersfield Town after a run of three wins in 23 games.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss boasted an impressive win rate of 51.16% at Hillsborough, the highest of any Owls boss in the 21st Century, but left Huddersfield with a win rate of just 13.04%.

And Peterborough United chairman MacAnthony has now had his say on Moore.

Darragh MacAnthony brandishes Moore a ‘terrible’ manager

MacAnthony will remember Darren Moore from last season’s League One play-off semi-final.

Sheffield Wednesday met MacAnthony’s Peterborough United in the semi-final and lost the first leg 4-0 away at London Road, but won the second leg 4-0 at home, then going on draw 5-5 on aggregate after extra time and winning 5-3 on penalties.

The Owls eventually beat Barnsley in the final but Moore left after a feud with owner Dejphon Chansiri at the start of the summer.

Now having been back in management and back out, MacAnthony has given his verdict on Moore.

When discussing the news of Moore being sacked, MacAnthony said on the Hard Truth Podcast:

“Rightly so. He’s about 3 in 24. He’s terrible. That’s incompetence.”

He added:

“It’s a poisoned chalice. They [Huddersfield Town] went and won the game 4-0 at the weekend, so they’re obviously decent enough. He just did a sh*t job. It happens. It doesn’t mean Darren Moore is a sh*t manager. He got Wednesday up. He did what he did to us. He’s done previously well. I’m sure he’ll be back. Some managers just have a bad run.”

What next for ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore

Moore is a very tricky subject among Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Whilst his record is statically one of the best-ever for a Sheffield Wednesday boss, he ultimately achieved what was least expected of his side, and few had hope that he could’ve guided Sheffield Wednesday to safety in the Championship this season.

And his tenure at Huddersfield Town perhaps exposed him as a manager and coach, so what the future holds for him remains to be seen.

Still, his pedigree is high with promotion with Sheffield Wednesday on his CV, and Owls fans have plenty of fond memories of his tenure with that win over MacAnthony’s Peterborough being without doubt the best.

And like MacAnthony suggests, Huddersfield may have just been the wrong club at the wrong time for Moore, who’ll be determined to prove his worth once again.

Another League One job looks like Moore’s next likeliest outcome, though to a mid-table one rather than a promotion-chasing one.

And after a very turbulent 12 months or so, expect Darren Moore to take some time off; maybe until the summer when some jobs open up and he has a transfer window to work on his side.
