Huddersfield Town boss Darren Moore has addressed the handball controversy in his side’s draw with Bristol City – as well as his choice of goalkeeper.
When the ball looked to have struck Bristol City’s George Tanner’s hand in the second half of the 1-1 draw, Terriers supporters and players angrily called for a penalty. To the relief of the visiting supporters, the referee disregarded protests.
Moore expressed his feelings about the incident after the game while remaining composed. “It was a handball,” he declared. I won’t tell them anything they haven’t already seen—everyone can clearly see that there is a handball.
Although we were aware of it at the time, the person who was most in need of seeing it either failed to notice it or didn’t think it was justified. The situation becomes even more dire when you watch the video again. He’s just missed the handball, but it’s there. It makes sense; occasionally, you can see those things and other times, you can’t. That particular occasion just wasn’t successful for us.
After the final whistle, the referee was not the only man whose decisions were discussed. Moore had Lee Nicholls available again following an injury layoff, but the Terriers manager chose to stick with Chris Maxwell in goal. The call proved fruitful, as stopper asserted his eligibility for a promotion from his understudy position.
Moore remarked, “You can understand everyone implying that Lee Nicholls is the best because of his tenure in the goal and the regularity of the games.” However, hopefully, this amazing football match demonstrates that when others have the chance, taking advantage of it can lead to a person’s opportunity.
“Maxi has seized his opportunity when it presented itself. I must make reference to something he told me when I first came here as a manager. “Gaffer, I’m ready for when I get called upon, even though Lee is in goal and I’m pushing Lee in training as number two,” he remarked. I have to say that he has been really outstanding over the past four games.
“I think we could have scored a goal very early on in the first ten minutes if he hadn’t been in such an alert state. Once more, kudos to him and Lee for returning. It’s great to have Lee back with us as well, as he has returned. I felt that today was the easiest decision I’ve made in the last three or four weeks.
