Motherwell and Rangers legend Davie Cooper statue restored to former glory

The statue of Rangers and Motherwell legend Davie Cooper in Hamilton has been restored to its former glory.

Davie Cooper’s statue, which was erected at the council’s Palace Grounds site in 1999, has now been cleaned up and the plaque outlining the player’s major sporting achievements has had its lettering redone.

“Time has unavoidably had an effect on the statue and its signage since it was unveiled 25 years ago.

Thus, the renovation of the monument and its surroundings is greatly appreciated. The Grounds Services crew of the council deserves a great deal of appreciation for their tireless efforts in restoring the bronze statue to its original splendour.

Only a few days before the anniversary of his premature death on March 23, 1995, at the age of 39, the renovations were finished.

“Having been a friend and team-mate of Davie, it was sad to see the deterioration of this memorial to him on a recent visit,” his former Rangers teammate David MacKinnon continued.

“I am thrilled that the good people at South Lanarkshire Council have reacted swiftly and, to their great credit, have restored this memorial to the memory of the great Davie Cooper that they created in his home town to immaculate condition after I brought up the issue and received a great deal of supportive feedback from the entire football spectrum.

“Thank you on behalf of everyone who showed their interest and, of course, Davie’s family, who’ll be delighted.”
