Today, Ben Brereton Diaz made his way back to Bramall Lane as he took a step closer to joining Sheffield United on loan from Premier League struggling Southampton. Following his good stint in South Yorkshire the previous season, the forward was identified as Chris Wilder’s priority target in this transfer window.
As we announced this morning, United recently made progress in talks with the Saints on Brereton Diaz’s return. The goal of the talks was to come to an agreement regarding the clause that the top-tier team wanted to include in the contract in the event that the Blades were promoted this season.
Brereton Diaz is at Bramall Lane for United’s Championship match against Norwich City this afternoon, indicating that their patience in trying to negotiate the best deal has paid off. The forward might make his second United “debut” at Swansea City in the middle of the week if the transfer goes according to plan and is finalised before Monday’s deadline.
United are also closing in on Leicester City forward Tom Cannon to improve their attacking ranks and are still looking for reinforcements in the centre of midfield and at the heart of defence. As we learnt earlier this week, former loan star Tommy Doyle and Wednesday loanee Shea Charles, of Wolves and Southampton respectively, are on United’s list of objectives alongside Hamza Choudhury, of the Foxes.
After a lacklustre start to life on the south coast after joining in a £7 million transfer from Villarreal in the summer, Brereton Diaz had made it apparent to all parties involved that if he was permitted to leave St. Mary’s this window, he would prefer to return to Bramall Lane.
