Sheffield United signs “keen elite” defender on Bramall Lane move

As they search for a new fullback option, Sheffield United may be able to make a great acquisition in 2025.

Sheffield United is headed for promotion.
Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United team is headed for an instant return to the Premier League with a third of the season remaining. The Blades are two points ahead of Burnley and one point ahead of Leeds United in the Championship after giving up just nine goals all season.

They appear to be well-positioned to be considered at the end of the campaign, even though promotion is by no means assured.

“They see Sky Sports, they see it pop up on the right-hand side of the screen, they see they are winning games – we have to embrace that pressure,” Wilder said, urging his players to accept the promotion drive.

“Embrace the pressure that comes with being a team that has a strong start to the season and deserves to be in our position. I advised us to cherish our current situation and embrace it since it wasn’t anticipated that we would advance in 2019. Instead of halfway up, would you rather be here?

“The season is about halfway through, and we have played eighteen games so far. We’ve played three quarters of the teams, if not more, and we are aware of the teams we haven’t played, including Cardiff, Burnley, and West Brom, as well as Plymouth.

Alfie Gilchrist, a loanee who has started 15 games thus far on the right side of defense, has been a crucial component of their success. However, as there is uncertainty regarding his future after this season, it appears that Sheffield United may be considering a another defender.

The “elite” defender is wanted by Sheffield United to return to Bramall Lane.

According to TalkSport, the Blades are considering re-signing Kyle Walker this summer, which would boost their prospects of success if they are promoted. The defender played in Bramall Lane’s development system before being immediately signed by Tottenham. Since then, he has become a Premier League legend, winning six league titles and a Champions League trophy with Manchester City.

Reece James, a right-back and England teammate, called Walker “elite” at the start of the most recent season, saying: “His all-round quality as a player and person is at an elite level.” He is an excellent professional who has been at the top for a number of years.

His time at the Etihad, however, may be coming to an end, according to recent sources. If he were permitted to leave the team, a bidding war would ensue for his signature, with Walker “expected to receive lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and the MLS” in addition to interest from his hometown.

Despite the lucrative offers, the Blades are likely to have the advantage in the race for the England international, with Walker having already made clear his desire to see out his career in Sheffield.

“I’d like to finish at Sheffield United. That’s something that I would actually like to do”, he told Rio Ferdinand’s podcast back in March.

“I was there from such a young age until that until I went to Tottenham and I only played five [league] games before I went to Tottenham, and then went back on loan for half a season. So I think I’ve got like 35 games and I’d like to go for as long as possible, to give back or even pass on my experience to the younger players that are coming through or players that are there then. If I can do that, then I’d like to, yeah.”

Though he is no longer the star player he once was, the 34-year-old could help bring vital experience to a side that set a record for the most goals conceded in a single season last time they were in the Premier League.
