Letest;Another huge injuries for springbok ahead of France quarterfinals”

France’s MARSEILLE, on October 1 (Reuters) – After beating Tonga 49-18 on Sunday to move the reigning champions closer to a spot in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals, South Africa will send wing Makazole Mapimpi for diagnostics on a fracture to his cheekbone.

The 2019 World Cup winner may not be present should they advance because of his collision with tackler Augustine Pulu, which the television match official reviewed but did not issue a yellow card for.

“Makazole has a fracture of his cheekbone, so he will go for specialist scans to determine the severity of it,” Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber said following the seven-try victory.

The return of flyhalf Handre Pollard, who played 50 minutes in his first test in 13 months, was better news for Nienaber. Since May, when Pollard returned from a calf injury, he has played for his team Leicester Tigers for just 30 minutes.

“Makazole has a fracture of his cheekbone, so he will go for specialist scans to determine the severity of it,” Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber said after the seven-try victory.

Better news for Nienaber came with the return of flyhalf Handre Pollard, who played 50 minutes in his first test in 13 months. Pollard has only played 30 minutes for his team, the Leicester Tigers, since May, when he made a full recovery from a calf injury.

Nienaber said it was comparable to when they raised the title in Japan four years ago and that he doesn’t mind taking a break from the sport.

“We also finished our pool quite early and we had a 12 or 13 day preparation break before the quarter-final against Japan,” he explained.

“We’ve done this previously, and it was successful the first time. In order to prepare and understand what we can do better if we want to remain in this competition until the conclusion, we will give the players two to three days off and a mental break.

After a run of 17 games and their shocking defeat to Japan in 2015, the Boks gave up three tries in a World Cup encounter, but Nienaber was unconcerned.

“I’m quite pleased of myself from a defensive standpoint. When compared to a Tonga team that has improved as the tournament has gone on, the defense’s mindset was there, and the players put in a significant effort. It’s sometimes necessary to support the opposition.
