Wigan Athletic loan star reflects

Josh Murphy, a former winger for Wigan Athletic, looked back on a “tough few years” following Oxford United’s thrilling victory over Bolton Wanderers that propelled them into the Championship.

Ten years ago, when he was still at Norwich, the 29-year-old played a stint on loan with Latics. He was literally the difference in the League One play-off final at Wembley.

“There has been a noticeable improvement, since I recall being jeered off last season.

“It’s crazy, my brother sent a text into our family group chat, ‘this last time last year I got told to find another club’ and now I’ve just got the club their objective of getting promoted, so I’m just lost for words “I’m absolutely ecstatic for the boys and the supporters. Next year, all of us will be participating in championship football.

Murphy’s contract expires this summer, so it’s possible that his time in office is up.

He said, “I want to play as high as I can,” on BBC Radio Oxford. “My family, the club, and myself are the people I believe I owe it to.”

“I just want to take my mind off everything, it’s been a long, tough season and I just want to enjoy my summer.”

After being signed by Malky Mackay near the end of the 2014–15 season, Murphy made five appearances for Latics before going back to his parent club, Norwich.

Joe Bennett and Josh McEachran, two more former Latics players, contributed to Oxford’s triumph over the weekend.
