Controversial ex-Rangers favourite set for surprise return:

Former Rangers and Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam is set for a surprise return to English football as manager of Fleetwood Town.

Should the deal for the Rangers Academy graduate, 38, go through, then it would be Charlie Adam’s first job as a manager since retiring from playing in 2022.

Adam – who ended his career at Dundee after an impressive spell south of the border – looks set to take over from ex-Hibs boss Lee Johnson, who has just been sacked at Highbury Stadium.

Ex-Celtic midfielder Scott Brown also spent time in charge of the Cod Army, with the Scottish Sun the outlet reporting that Charlie Adam is expected to be the next Fleetwood Town manager.

Charlie Adam to take over at Fleetwood Town?

Rangers fans will remember Charlie Adam’s impressive left-boot during his six years at Ibrox where he scored 18 goals for the club.

Eventually leaving Ibrox in 2009 for Blackpool, the Scotland international midfielder inspired the Bloomfield Road club to Premier League promotion and eventually won a move to Liverpool.

Spending only one season at Anfield, the midfielder would go on to spend seven years with Stoke City before a stint with Reading and eventually returning to Dundee, where Adam was born.

Considered one of the most technically gifted Scottish players of his generation, a move into management will raise a few eyebrows in the game north of the border.

But whilst Charlie Adam could soon be celebrating his first chance at a top job with Fleetwood, some Rangers fans might hang fire on the congratulations.

Ex-Liverpool star had Rangers fall-out

There will be a mixed response from Rangers fans about the news, with many yet to forgive Charlie Adam for comments the midfielder made about the club in 2012.

Whilst plenty were giving a Rangers a kick during their financial implosion, the last thing fans expected was the same from one of their own.

And yet Charlie Adam – who claimed he was only looking out for the interests of goalkeeping brother Grant – stated he was “not interested” in the club’s situation.

But now we’ve seen the former Rangers star return to Ibrox for Legends games and it’s something which doesn’t quite sit right with Gers fans.

So whilst Charlie Adam looks set to take over at Fleetwood Town, there will be more than a few Rangers fans who’re “not interested” in how it pans out.
