Fairweather was hailed by Sunderland as “a beloved character behind the scenes at the Academy of Light” and passed away on Monday night in the company of his loved ones.

“Carlton’s personality and charisma were unique,” stated Kristjaan Speakman, director of Sporting. He worked in every department of our club, and his commitment, modesty, and work ethic are what make him so well-liked.

“You need consistency in a sporting setting, and Carlton’s personality hardly ever changed from vivacious, energetic, and contagious.

“Add this to someone who crafted their skill of coaching and mentoring over so many years and it’s a special mix.”

“To this day Carlton is fondly remembered by the Wimbledon faithful and will be sorely missed by all those who knew him well,” the Wimbledon website said in a statement.

The winger, who was born in Camberwell, was a part of the notorious Crazy Gang, who in 1992 became the first members of the Premier League after winning promotion to the top flight.

After beginning his career as a draughtsman, Fairweather played in non-League football for Dulwich Hamlet, Bromley and Tooting, and Mitcham United before joining the Dons at the age of 23 for a pittance.
