With a huge new contract that might be the “biggest in League One,” Leyton Orient is poised to stave off interest from rival teams for their much sought-after manager Richie Wellens.
After losing to Charlton Athletic at Wembley in the play-off final last season, the O’s were not promoted to the Championship. The team led by Nathan Jones won 1-0 in a close match.
The team received praise for its performances for most of the season, even though they were unable to advance to the second division. Before a spectacular run propelled them to the play-off spots in 2024, the team was sagging towards the bottom of the standings.
This run, coupled with the impressive performances have put Richie Wellens at the top of the shopping list of many clubs in the EFL.
Leyton Orient‘s new owners are keen to tie down the talented manager by offering him a “bumper” new deal that according to Alan Nixon could “be the biggest in League One“.

Wellens has previously had spells at Oldham Athletic, Swindon Town, Doncaster Rovers and Salford City but his three year stay with Leyton Orient now looks likely to continue.
The club will be making a statement if they are able to close the transaction, as they will need to rebuild a portion of their successful team. While a large portion of their team, including Jamie Donley, Josh Keeley, and Jack Currie, are all on loan, Charlie Kelman, the team’s highest scorer from the previous season, is expected to return to parent club QPR.
Although Wellens is aware that it will be challenging to replace several of these players, the team is undoubtedly in a far better position this summer transfer window than they were the previous year thanks to their newfound success and cash this season.
