Birmingham City’s player of many years is highlighted by .
A player like Jay Stansfield has been long overdue for Birmingham City. a natural finisher with an uncanny ability to find the goal from any angle.
Stansfield, who until recently was an unknown quantity at the Championship level, made his presence known quickly. It was evident that Blues had struck gold as he deftly slid the ball around Plymouth Argyle defender Lewis Gibson before firing home a winning goal on his debut in the 95th minute.
Stansfield followed that up with strikes against Millwall and Preston North End – both excellent finishes in their own right. Would any other Blues player have converted any of those three chances?
The fact Stansfield has three goals against an xG (expected goals) rating of 1.2, according to FBREF, shows just how clinical the 20-year-old has been. The crux of this article isn’t whether Stansfield should or shouldn’t play centre-forward for Blues, which is the debate on everyone’s lips at the moment.
It is merely to shine a light on Blues’ most ruthless finisher in many a year. Stansfield might not match the 22-goal haul Che Adams managed in 2018/19, but there is no doubt that finishing comes more naturally to him than his predecessor.
While it is early days in Stansfield’s St Andrew’s career, he is showing finishing qualities few have matched in Royal Blue since Kevin Phillips donned the number nine shirt.
The goal is just to draw attention to the Blues’ most merciless finisher in recent years. It’s possible that Stansfield won’t score as many goals as Che Adams did in 2018–19, but there’s no denying that he has a better knack for finishing than Adams did.
Although Stansfield’s St Andrew’s career is still in its early stages, he is displaying finishing abilities that few have equaled in Royal Blue since Kevin Phillips wore the number nine shirt.
Stansfield will only play in the second tier for one season at his present rate before moving up to Premier League responsibilities with parent club Fulham. Stansfield is a rare player at St Andrew’s, so let’s take use of him while we can.
