The Terriers are considering a move for the defender, as FLW exclusively reported back in May, although Barnsley is also a potential rival.
In an attempt to strengthen John Eustace’s first team roster, Derbyshire Live has also connected Derby County with a move for the Lincoln City player, whose contract expires at the end of the month.
Football Insider reported in January of last year that the Imps had extended their offer to the centre-back, but as he considers his options for the future beyond this season, no deal has been agreed.
Huddersfield have also already made two new centre-back signings this summer, which could impact their interest in O’Connor, with Sean Roughan and Joe Low joining the club.
Paudie O’Connor transfer claim
When asked if he saw the club continuing their pursuit of O’Connor, FLW’s Huddersfield fan pundit Graeme Rayner claimed he’d like to see the defender join the club.
He believes it will be interesting to see where he ends up, suggesting the 27-year-old would be a great addition to the squad for next season.
“If we could get him, I think that would be interesting,” Rayner told Football League World.
“I know he’s been offered a contract by Lincoln, and I know there’s also potential interest in him from Championship clubs.
“But he would be potentially a natural replacement for Matty Pearson and/or Tom Lees at the club in that he seems to be notably comfortable on the ball, he’s a goal threat at the other end of the pitch and he’s physically strong, and he’s a bit of a leader, which is something we’ve lacked.
“If we’re able to get him that would be great, but it will be interesting to see what happens regarding his future.
“There’s certainly a few clubs interested in him, I think Derby are interested in him, Wycombe Wanderers are interested in him.
“I think I heard Stoke are interested in him, so there’s a lot of interest.
“But if we were able to swoop in and poach him that would be a really good signing.”
Huddersfield have appointed Lee Grant as manager for next season, and have already signed the likes of Marcus Harness and Ryan Ledson, as well as potential centre-back competition for O’Connor in Roughan and Low.
Huddersfield winning O’Connor race would be a coup
O’Connor was a standout figure in League One last season, and performed quite well across his three seasons with Lincoln.
Given he is set to become a free agent, it’s no surprise there are a number of clubs sniffing around him.
Huddersfield will want to compete for promotion next season, and bringing in the Irishman would help with that ambition.
But the opportunity to step up to the Championship will be tempting, which gives Derby and Stoke the edge in any contract talks.
