In order to stop playing football full-time, Aaron Wildig has declined a new contract with Newport County AFC.
The Exiles extended an offer to the 33-year-old Hereford native, who is recovering from a ruptured knee ligament sustained in November.
But after a career that began at Cardiff in 2009, the midfielder has determined that the moment is right to retire from professional football.
“After a lot of thought, I’ve decided to move into a part-time playing model as I have opportunities away from football,” said Wildig, who completed his UEFA A licence with the FAW last season.
“After the injury I had, it feels like the right time to shift my focus towards things off the pitch that will also benefit my family.
“I want to give a big thank you to the club for the last three years. From the chairman, the managers I’ve worked under, the players, staff, and the fans, I’ve genuinely enjoyed my time at Newport.
“It hasn’t always been smooth on the pitch, but being named captain last season was a huge honour and a proud moment for me. I’m just gutted it had to end the way it did with my injury back in November.
“The support I’ve received throughout my time has been brilliant and I’m really grateful for that. I wish the club and the fans nothing but success in the future.’’
Wildig arrived from Morecambe in the summer of 2022 and made 90 appearances for County over three campaigns.
He made a flying start to last season and his calm presence was sorely missed after the injury when making a tackle against Grimsby in mid-October, especially after the sale of fellow midfielder Bryn Morris in January.
Wildig, who gave the County academy some advice as they were making a comeback, thinks the team can compete in League Two next season with a new manager.
“After meeting David Hughes over the past few weeks, I am certain that the club has made the right choice and that he will advance the situation,” Wildig stated.
Additionally, goalie Nick Townsend declined a new contract with the County in preference of joining National League Eastleigh.
Additionally, the team has been negotiating with Shane McLoughlin, a full-back/midfielder, and James Clarke, a centre-back.
