Barry Robson previously signed the full-back from Central Coast Mariners, and he will return to Australia’s A-League on July 1st when he joins Brisbane Roar.
After a ‘tough’ stint at Pittodrie, Aberdeen defender James McGarry will depart the team on July 1 to rejoin Australia’s A-League.
Former manager Barry Robson brought the 27-year-old to the Granite City from the Central Coast Mariners in 2023, and he has since signed with the Brisbane Roar.
Before making his debut against BK Hacken in the Europa League play-off match, where they drew 2-2 in Sweden, he had just won a trophy down under.

But he found it difficult to maintain the left-back position, and Jack MacKenzie frequently replaced him in the starting lineup. He also suffered from a number of injuries.
After just 28 games for the Dons, with his lone goal coming against Dumbarton in the Premier Sports Cup last July, McGarry will move on after a brief loan with Greek team Kallithea in January of last year.
Jimmy Thelin, the manager of the Dons, acknowledged that the New Zealand captain had had a challenging time, but he gave McGarry credit for his steadfast dedication.

“James’ life was a little challenging due to a combination of frustrating injuries and Jack (MacKenzie’s) form, but I have never had any complaints about his attitude or professionalism,” he said on the club website.
“When a player makes a move, sometimes things just don’t go as planned, and I believe that’s the case here.
“He has a great deal of A-League experience, and I have no doubt that he will succeed there with a new beginning. He departs with our gratitude and our best wishes for his future professional endeavours.
