According to TEAMtalk, Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer has joined Sunderland captain Dan Neil on Everton’s shortlist of midfielders.
Having missed out on automatic promotion, Sheffield United is getting ready for the Championship play-offs. After the last day this weekend, SUFC will play whoever finishes in sixth place because they already have third locked down.

The Blades will be confident of success in the play-offs having been far away from the chasing pack for much of the season, but the unpredictability of such fixtures means they won’t be taking league position or points for granted anymore.

There are a number of star players at Bramall Lane who will have admirers regardless of how this season ends, but there are some who will be highly likely to attract firm interest if the promotion bid fails.

Among them is midfielder Gustavo Hamer, and TEAMtalk has revealed that the Sheffield United man is on the shortlist at Premier League side Everton ahead of the summer.

The Toffees are out to make a new midfield addition in the next window but a deal for Hamer will be made more difficult if SUFC come up.

The same can be said for Sunderland captain Dan Neil, with this fresh report reiterating Everton’s admiration of the Wearside ace. Also on the radar are Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Wilfred Ndidi.

A step up surely awaits Gustavo Hamer

Hamer first starred in the Championship with Coventry City and his step up to the Premier League with Sheffield United was a deserved one. He didn’t look at all out of place there either, managing four goals and seven assists in 36 top-flight games.

Upon the drop back to the Championship with SUFC, Hamer has starred again as expected. Playing in a new role on the left, the 27-year-old has nine goals and seven assists in 40 league games.

Frankly, this season has confirmed that many already knew – Hamer is too good for the Championship.

If he can’t make the step up with the Blades via the Championship play-offs, a move to a higher level surely awaits Hamer regardless.

The impact of promotion for Sheffield United

The difference between promotion from the Championship and staying in the division is clear for Sheffield United. Staying down will put them at risk of losing big assets such as Hamer, Anel Ahmedhodzic, Vini Souza and more.

However, a Premier League return will see their chances of retaining such stars will grow greatly. They will also have the opportunity to add to those big players with some statement signings, which are a must to manage the step up.

Chris Wilder and co had to embark on a rebuild after relegation and if they can’t bounce back straight away, there will likely be another fairly significant turnover of players. The stakes are high for their upcoming play-off clashes but time will tell just who stands between them and a top-flight return after ending the regular season against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
