Derek Adams, the manager of Morecambe, acknowledged that his team was second best during Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Grimsby Town.
With five games remaining in their League Two season, the Shrimps concluded the day six points from safety after suffering their ninth straight league loss away from home, their worst run in the EFL.
Kieran Green’s first goal for Grimsby had been cancelled out by Andy Dallas, but Luca Barrington’s goal and Green’s second of the day guaranteed loss.
Adams said: “Going in at half-time, we were really happy because we were in the game and it was very even.
“We scored an outstanding goal from Andy Dallas and there wasn’t much between both sides.
“They scored two minutes into the second half and, from there, we were chasing the game.
“We did that and we made changes to freshen things up, but we didn’t do enough.
“We huffed and puffed and we chased the game, but didn’t put them under enough pressure and I felt they deserved to win the game.
Despite our best efforts, we lost against a team that was superior than us in the second half.
Adams was grateful for the 128 travelling supporters who had supported Morecambe’s players at Blundell Park.
“I can’t thank our supporters enough,” he continued. Our little group of fans clapped and sung over the ninety minutes.
“That’s what we need, we need a fighting spirit. The players have shown that.
“They’ve shown that they’ve got bottle because they’ve had that in the last couple of games – and we will have to have that going into the last five.”
