Town have been in the market for a new, physically-dominant defender for the last few weeks and hope to have completed a move for the 33-year-old.

The Adver is aware that Tafazolli was at the Nigel Eady County Ground on Saturday before Swindon’s 2-1 win over Shrewsbury Town to undergo medical testing.

Despite this happening, the final details of the deal, like whether it would be a loan or he would be allowed to go for free, are still being ironed out.

This could be the first deal of what looks set to be a busy final week of the transfer window for Swindon, as they still want another striker to replace the injured Harry Smith and Botan Ameen, who is set to depart.

Ryan Delaney would also ideally find a new club where he would be a more regular player to help Swindon trim their wage bill, but there is interest in other members of the squad, which could turn into bids.

Swindon started with two players in Tom Wilson-Brown and Filzofe Mabete, who have played fewer than ten league matches combined in their back three at the weekend, and will be without James Ball for around two months after he suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury against Oldham Athletic.

Tafazolli, who stands at six feet and five inches, is expected to be a big addition in assisting them with nous at the back, and also in the air, where they have conceded eight goals so far this season, six of which have stemmed from set pieces.

Ian Holloway said when asked about his work in the transfer market: “I would rather talk about that when I definitely know that it is happening.

“I don’t like to talk about how many baby chickens I have in those eggs before they hatch out, like I used to with my parakeets.

“You should never count as half of them will be blown, I had eight once and I thought, ‘Wow, eight rosellas, they are going to be worth this,’ and then there were only two.

“I want to wait and get somebody if I can, and I do not know if that is happening yet.”

Tafazolli has made more than 300 appearances in the EFL, across League Two, League One, and the Championship during an accomplished career.

The 33-year-old has played for Peterborough United, Wycombe, and Hull City, but also was at Salisbury City early in his career and now could return to Wiltshire 14 years on.

The defender has cleared a century of appearances with Wycombe, but has been phased out at Adams Park and spent time on loan at Lee Man in the Hong Kong Premier League in the second half of last season.
